Emulation is often the key to success. Not everyone with great ideas has the ability to market and sell them. I guess it depends how ruthless and power hungry you are!!
As for the software I think the cost of most software packages is small compared to the revenue one can generate from good quality work. My thoughts on this have evolved over time in the industry and will now never embark on a project without paid software out of respect for its development.
I think students and educators should be given these licenses for free though, as I’ve found that once a package is learned a majority of its students will stay loyal.

My wife gets everything because she volunteered to maintain the website for her department at the University and she asked if she could get a personal copy of CS3 so she would be able to install it to her personal machine if she needs to work from home.
Anyway, if that ends I don’t really consider the price that high.
